5K Recap by Steve Lindsay
A sudden chill in the morning air was just enough to leave frost on the new spring grass. Cold reminders of this past year’s mild winter brought many first-time and full-time runners and walkers to downtown Fowlerville on the first Saturday of May. In addition, Genesis House hosted their first ever 5K Walk/Run on May 6th with an impressive turnout of close to 100 people sweating it out on a 3.1 mile course. Proud volunteers from Genesis House made up of supportive members and staff took care of everything on a productive and professional level. No stone was left unturned from the registration tables to the large digital timer keeping track of runners and walkers crossing the finish line. From Grand Avenue to Grand River, the route offered a number of spots through Fowlerville Park including the roundabout near the Family Impact Center. Along the way, a few water stations were available and ready to serve the sprinters and speed walkers on their journeys. Also, Genesis House remained true to their clubhouse colors with their vibrant 5K t-shirts, too. When the sun poured from the sky, runners and walkers alike were prepared physically and mentally for the long haul with their number bibs pinned to their active wear. Plus, a large tent was provided by A-1 Rental of Howell for volunteers working the registration tables and for others finding a little shade. When the event was complete, Genesis House earned $3,380 in total donations with 95 individuals running or walking the 5K. Coming off the successful spaghetti fundraiser back in March, there’s no stopping the momentum. So far, every move has been a positive step in the right direction for Genesis House in 2017.

On an unseasonably cool and comfortable Saturday morning, the early hours seemed to have a misty, dream-like atmosphere due to the dense fog. More than a dozen people from the clubhouse took part in one of Genesis House's most well-known social activities, The North American International Auto Show. Based on my impression, everyone had a strong sense of anticipation and excitement for the event. Many members including our staff leader, Greg, were eager and hungry to see their favorite cars and trucks at the show. Speaking of hunger, most of us decided to have lunch at Five Guys Restaurant while a few others ate at a local coney island down the street. After our generous helpings of burgers and fries, Genesis House took a bus directly down to Cobo Hall for the famous event. Inside the auto show, the place was lively and literally electric with all of the big name manufacturers from Ford to Chevrolet. Many visitors were mesmerized by the wide variety of vehicles on display. Some of the most popular models were the Dodge Ram 2500 pickup, the Jeep CJ Sixty Six, and the Volkswagen Minivan bringing back the classic free spirit vibe from the late 1960's, but with a more modern hippie flavor to it. Large overhead digital screens populated the entire event showcasing each make and model on hand including some well-dressed female models hosting the auto show, too. When the afternoon came to a close, the journey home from Detroit was a satisfying one. Who knows what next year's future cars and trucks will be on display? That's the beauty of it and Genesis House was very pleased to be a special part of this annual and amazing auto show.

A new beginning and a fresh start is what most people think of when 2017 arrived on a gorgeous, sunny, bitterly cold January morning. Most of all, Genesis House was open on a holiday where members and staff can spend time together and help celebrate the first of the year. With a large turnout, the clubhouse enjoyed a vast variety of pizzas ranging from vegetarian style to cheese and pepperoni. Salad and homemade brownies closed out the menu for the day, too. During the morning and afternoon hours, staff member, Susan, and all clubhouse friends, including myself, listened to some music while we ate in the café. Good food and some casual conversation were the highlights on New Year’s Day at Genesis House. A few members even had some resolutions and personal things they needed to improve on for 2017. As members were reflecting on the previous year, there was a strong level of promise and optimism for the next twelve months ahead. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Not only should we apply these hopeful goals to our own lives each day but many days beyond this year. Let’s strive to achieve our best efforts for 2017.
